Web creator Tim Berners-Lee has made it clear that he does not agree with the so-called Web3 vision, which replaces the current Web with cryptocurrency and blockchain.

According to CNBC on the 4th (local time), Tim Bernersley attended a web summit in Lisbon and said that he does not see blockchain as a viable solution to build the next generation of the Internet.

Tim Bernersley is working on his own web decentralization project called Solid. However, solid is not related to blockchain or cryptocurrency.

“In order to discuss the impact of new technology, we have to understand what the term we are discussing actually means beyond Buzzword,” Berners Lee said. “It is really shameful that people on the Ethereum side used the name Web 3 for blockchain work. “Web3 is not the web at all,” he said.

Web3 is currently widely used in the field of technology to implement a more decentralized web using blockchain and cryptocurrency technology.

Web3 advocates also emphasize that unlike the current web environment led by a small number of big techs based on blockchain and cryptocurrency, users can exert more influence on platform decision-making.

Tim Berners-Lee shares a vision to keep big tech companies from having user data at their disposal, but he is not sure about the blockchain.

“Blockchain protocols can be good in some areas, but they are not in solid,” he said. “Blockchain is too slow, too expensive, and too open.” Personal data storage should be fast, inexpensive, and private. “Solid does not use blockchain,” he said.

He also pointed out that people often confuse Web 3.0 and Web 3, their proposals for modifying the web.

Tim Berners-Lee founded Startup Inc. with the goal of giving users more control over their data. According to TechCrunch, Inlup also attracted investment worth $30 million in December last year.

Inrup aims to implement a user-led web environment through a global single sign-on function, a login ID that allows users to share data with others, and a common general-purpose API that allows applications to pull data from any source.
